Portfolio Adventures

Right now I'm working on my admission to the teacher education program at my school. As part of the process, I need to go have an interview with a professor, and I need to bring a small "portfolio" of my work. So basically, I'm going through all my old projects and trying to figure out what best represents my abilities and my individual style. It didn't seem like it would be too hard, but I'm having trouble narrowing it down. Of course I'll want to include my metalwork, but I also should include some drawings and possibly some other things too.

I'll definitely be including this piece, because I wrote a reflection paper for my portfolio on the experience of making it. The assignment was to study a historical piece of metalwork, and then update it for contemporary use. I chose to study the pomander- those little metal scent containers people carried around during the dark ages and renaissance to ward away the plague. My update was to make a pomander that functioned as a container for breathmints- sort of a comment on the obsession with cleanliness and freshness in our culture, compared to the dependence on scent to dispel contagion in the past.

It's awfully nice to not have to work conceptually anymore.

Heehee!

This is soooooo amazing!! I love containers. Does this one open? How did your interview go? Teaching jewelry making will be so much fun!
